Romance
Romance is probably one of the most popular genres read. This is partly because we all have that romantic part inside of us, and partly because the genre of romance spreads across all other genres. A book is classified as romance if that aspect of it is more prominent than the fantasy, or distopian (to only name a couple) aspects.
A snippet of as romantic it's going to get
I never truly knew what love was until I met him, my soul-mate, Alexander Kingston. His very being makes my heart warm at the sight of it, wanting to hold it, wanting to love it. I feel incomplete every time we are apart, but when his strong arms wind around me I feel like I am more than whole, angelic. He makes me feel like I am worth something, because to be worth something to him is to be worth something to the world.
Conventions of Romance Novels
- Two people that fall in love
- Central conflict trying to divide the lovers (such as parents disapproving, societal obligations etc.)
- In more common novels, there is usually a love triangle (for example, Jacob and Edward both love Bella in Twilight)
- They actually have more of a chance of having a sad ending than any other genre (save horror of course)
- Character growth throughout the novel - the characters learn more about themselves through the other person
