Horror
What’s that in the dead of night? In the closet, under the
bed, through the woods lies your darkest nightmare. It’s HORROR.
Usually in the form of tense and dark literature, horror is a favourite genre for older ages. Its entire intent is to shock or scare the reader out of their mind. Horror may overlap with other genres such as: super natural, fantasy, dystopian, thriller and crime. Yet it is always easy to spot a horror book by the scary or dark themes such as murder, cannibalism, kidnapping, skinning and eating children, horrific surgery, axes and chainsaws.
Horror books deal with reader’s deepest fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. They provoke negative reactions from the reader, often startling or shocking them.
Some of the conventions of horror are:
- Suspense
- Gore
- Evil

A Snippet of Horror
Walk slowly down the winding path… winding… winding… winding to
where? Hear a noise. Must be a mouse. Keep walking. Never stop walking. Hear the
noise again, louder this time. Beating heart. Getting faster. Big hand on my
shoulder, pushing me down, down, down to the pavement. Skin scraping, rocks
inside me, blood in the dark. My blood. I’ve finally found you. A voice. Not
mine. Hands on my face, hands on my body, beating me, crushing me between sweaty
palms. Clothes turn to rags, rags fall away. Cold. So cold. Don’t touch me,don’t touch me! Hear a scream, who is
that? She’s in pain. Agony. Hear it again, it’s coming from me. See the blade,
see it brought down on my chest. More blood, warm hands. Drenched in red. Hack
at me, hack at me, feel what makes me tumbling out. See it on the pavement. So
much blood. I can’t –
